Repsol announces plans to build the first advanced biofuels plant in Spain

Repsol of Spain recently announced its intention to construct an advanced biofuels plant at the company’s existing Cartagena facility site to supply transportation fuels with a reduction in emissions.

The company is designing this facility to produce 250,000 tons of biofuel per year from recycled raw feedstock into products such as hydrobiodiesel, biojet fuel, bionaphtha, and biopropane. Repsol stated that the initial investment for this project was for €188 million and is due for completion in 2023.

Repsol has included biofuels with its automotive fuel production for many years now and has been increasing this content as technology has continued to improve. The company began aviation biofuel production last August for the first time at its Puertollano facilities, and is continuing this uptick in biofuel production with this plan for Cartagena.

Once operational, the Cartagena biofuel facility will allow Repsol to reduce CO2 emissions by 900,000 tons per year as the company strives to reach its energy transition goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
