Shell announces it will close the Convent refinery in Louisiana

Royal Dutch Shell announced on Thursday afternoon that it plans to shut down its Convent refinery in Louisiana due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  This closure is expected this month and will be the largest facility in the United States to close since the pandemic began its effect on the economy.

The company stated that this decision is part of its recently announced plan to reduce its refinery count as a transition towards a “low-carbon future”, where Shell will consolidate its assets into six energy and chemical parks.  The nearby Norco refinery site is expected to be one of those six site candidates.

Shell added that once the shutdown is complete, the company will continue to attempt to sell the 240,000 barrel per day refinery as this has been the plan since July.
