Sunshine Petrochemical Project in Louisiana Faces Further Delays

The United States Army has ordered a full environmental review of the already delayed Sunshine Project in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The $9.4 billion-dollar petrochemical facility has designs for multiple phases and has faced environmental group pressures for some time.

The U.S. Army announced on social media that Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, Jaime Pinkham, that the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will proceed with an environmental impact statement process for this project and could take years to complete.  Mr. Pinkham stated that “As a result of information received to date and my commitment for the Army to be a leader in the federal government's efforts to ensure thorough environmental analysis and meaningful community outreach, I conclude an EIS process is warranted to thoroughly review areas of concern, particularly those with environmental justice implications.”

As a result of this announcement, the permit for the Sunshine project will remain suspended until the EIS process has been completed with the results recorded.
