Engineering Breakthrough – The Davis Refinery Project in North Dakota will be the World’s First Net Zero Carbon Refinery

Design of the Davis Refinery has now established GHG emissions from Davis have been reduced to less than 50% of industry average levels, and the remaining GHG emissions are offset by coprocessing vegetable oil in its Diesel Hydrotreater Unit to produce Renewable Diesel. Davis will be the first refinery to achieve the Net Zero Carbon threshold.

The plant would be the largest deployment of FT CANS to date, seven times larger than any previously announced project using this technology.

Borealis Invests EUR 4.5 Million in Porvoo Steam Cracker, Enabling Increased Share of Circular Raw Materials Used in Production

Borealis announces a EUR 4.5 million investment in the cracker furnaces of its olefins unit in Porvoo, Finland. This investment ensures that the Porvoo steam cracker, which is part of a highly integrated petrochemical complex, can increase the share of renewable and recycled raw materials used in its base chemicals (ethylene and propylene) production; thus, supporting Borealis Strategy 2030 and driving the transformation to a circular economy. The Porvoo investment program, which has already been kicked off and is expected to be completed in 2025, follows last year's completion of a major cracker furnace update in Stenungsund, Sweden.

SABIC Fujian Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between SABIC Industrial Investment Company (wholly owned by SABIC) and Fujian Fuhua Gulei Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (holding by Fujian Energy and Petrochemical Group). Formed in 2022, SABIC Fujian Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. is a 51:49 joint venture, with SABIC being the majority owner. On January 22, 2024, SABIC announced the final investment decision for the SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Complex (Sino-Saudi Gulei Ethylene Complex Project) and plans to begin construction this year and expects to complete construction in 2026. The complex is the largest single investment joint venture project with foreign investment in Fujian Province to date.

Cepsa and Bio-Oils begin construction on the largest 2G biofuels plant in southern Europe with investment of 1.2 billion euros

Cepsa and Bio-Oils, a subsidiary of Apical, are beginning construction of the largest second-generation biofuels plant in southern Europe. This facility, which will flexibly produce 500,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (hydrogenated vegetable oil or HVO) annually, will allow the joint venture formed by both companies to double its current production capacity. The new 2G biofuels plant, along with the existing facilities operated by Cepsa and Bio-Oils in Huelva, Spain, will form the second largest renewable fuel complex in Europe, with a total production capacity of 1 million tons per annum.

MAIRE announces that NEXTCHEM (Sustainable Technology Solutions), through its nitrogen technology licensor Stamicarbon, has been awarded a licensing and equipment supply contract for a state-of-the-art urea melt and granulation plant in Egypt for El-Nasr Company for Intermediate Chemicals (NCIC). The plant is expected to have a production capacity of 1,050 metric tons per day of urea and will be located in an area 100 km southeast of Cairo.

Eni Moves Ahead with Conversion of the Livorno Refinery into a Bio-refinery

Today, Eni confirms its decision to build Italy's third bio-refinery in Livorno. The project, first announced in October 2022 and followed by an application for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in November 2022, is awaiting official authorisations and includes the construction of three new facilities for the production of hydrogenated biofuels: a biogenic feedstock pre-treatment unit; a 500,000 tonnes/year Ecofining™ plant; and a facility to produce hydrogen from methane gas.

Shell Deutschland GmbH has taken a final investment decision (FID) to convert the hydrocracker of the Wesseling site at the Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland into a production unit for Group III base oils, used in making high-quality lubricants such as engine and transmission oils. Crude oil processing will end at the Wesseling site by 2025 but will continue at the Godorf site.

Técnicas Reunidas and Sinopec awarded two contracts by Saudi Aramco for more than 3.3 billion USD

Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest energy companies, has awarded a joint venture formed by the Spanish company Técnicas Reunidas and the Chinese Sinopec Engineering Group the development of new Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) fractionation facilities in Saudi Arabia. The works will be developed on the basis of two EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts for the execution of Riyas NGL Fractionation Trains (Package 1) and Riyas NGL Common Facilities (Package 2), which includes utilities, storage and export facilities. Total investment arising from these two contracts amounts to more than 3.3 billion USD. Since the joint venture is 65% owned by Técnicas Reunidas and 35% by Sinopec Engineering Group, the Spanish company is entitled to more than 2.15 billion USD of this total amount.
