Cepsa and Bio-Oils begin construction on the largest 2G biofuels plant in southern Europe with investment of 1.2 billion euros

Cepsa and Bio-Oils, a subsidiary of Apical, are beginning construction of the largest second-generation biofuels plant in southern Europe. This facility, which will flexibly produce 500,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (hydrogenated vegetable oil or HVO) annually, will allow the joint venture formed by both companies to double its current production capacity. The new 2G biofuels plant, along with the existing facilities operated by Cepsa and Bio-Oils in Huelva, Spain, will form the second largest renewable fuel complex in Europe, with a total production capacity of 1 million tons per annum.

Repsol Selects Honeywell Ecofining™ Technology For Biofuel Production In Spain

Honeywell announced today that Repsol has licensed Honeywell Ecofining™ technology to produce renewable fuels from feedstocks such as used cooking oil and waste animal fat at Repsol’s facility in Puertollano, Spain. Repsol is designing this plant to convert approximately 240 thousand metric tons per annum (KMTA) of waste feeds/feedstocks to renewable diesel and other products.

In doing so, Iberdrola will export green ammonia to the Netherlands through the planned ACE import terminal at the Port of Rotterdam and transport it as green hydrogen via the Dutch national hydrogen network of Hynetwork Services to European customers.

pHYnix selects Howden to supply the Vitale compressor, the first commercial-scale plant with 10 MW of electrolytic production.

Vitale will have a production capacity of 4.3 tons of hydrogen per day. The plant, located in Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), has just begun construction. Howden will supply two diaphragm compressors for the hydrogen produced at the Vitale plant, in order to compress and inject the hydrogen from the electrolyzer into the gas infrastructure and tube trailers for distribution. In addition, the contract includes maintenance service consisting of continuous monitoring of equipment through Howden Uptime and other service capabilities.

280-Mile Hydrogen Pipeline Connecting Spain to France to Cost $2.6 Billion

An underwater pipeline set to carry green hydrogen between Spain and France will cost about 2.5 billion euros ($2.6 billion), Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday, adding he hoped the European Union would partly fund the project. The pipeline between Barcelona and Marseille will have a capacity of 2 million tonnes a year and be ready by the end of the decade, Sanchez said at a summit of Mediterranean European Union leaders in the southeastern Spanish port city of Alicante.

The plant located in Alcázar de San Juan has just laid its first stone and is expected to come into operation at the beginning of 2024. Vitale is one of the first European renewable hydrogen production plants and the first in Spain to have different uses on a commercial scale: direct supply to local industrial customers, transport and mobility through distribution to hydrogen filling stations, known as HRS, and finally, injection into the gas network or blending.
