BPCL Cancels Polyols Project in Kochi
The Bharat Petroleum Corporation of India (BPCL) recently decided to cease the development of its polyols petrochemical project in Kochi, India and instead focus on a new development of polypropylene production at the site. Cost overruns for the polyols project were cited as reasons for the change in direction.
BPCL had been working on the $1.5 billion dollar specialty polyols project since 2019, but costs had spiraled due to increases in equipment and material expenses. The Kochi Polyols project had been scheduled for a 2024 startup that included the namesake polyols plant with a 250,000 tons per year capacity, a 100,000 tons per year propylene glycol (PG) unit, a 300,000 tons per year propylene oxide (PO) unit and a 140,000 tons per year monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant.
This plan appears to be shelved now as BPCL is looking to develop a polypropylene plant that would utilize as much as 250,000 tons per year of propylene from the existing Kochi facilities. GEI analysts will continue to monitor this potential development.
