Petrochina Launches $4.52 Billion Complex Expansion

According to Chinese state media, PetroChina has begun a program to expand an existing refinery in south China into an integrated petrochemicals complex.  The costs for this expansion was reported to be $4.52 billion USD.

PetroChina plans to add 14 petrochemical units to the Guangxi facilities, while continuing to keep crude oil refining capacity ongoing. This is part of the company’s plan to expand its petrochemical production while also reducing refined fuel production.  This follows the current trend of adding high-end petrochemicals due to growing demand.

Under this program, PetroChina will implement facilities with a total annual capacity of 2.76 MMtpy, including a 1.2 MMtpy ethylene unit, a 550,000 tpy gasoline hydrocracking unit and a 350,000 tpy aromatics unit. PetroChina expects to finish completion of this program in 2025.
