Alkylation Unit Begins Production at Valero’s St. Charles Refinery in Louisiana

Lummus Technology announced on March 1st that the 17,000 barrel per day alkylation unit at the St. Charles refinery has begun production.  Lummus serves as the technology licensor for this project, which is operated by Valero.

This alkylation unit will convert relatively low value chemical feedstocks like isobutane and alkenes into alkylates, for the further development of high-octane gasoline. This new unit has an estimated cost of $314 million dollars and will produce 17,000 barrels daily of alkylate product, with a potential maximum capacity of 25,000 barrels per day.

Lummus Technology came onto the project in 2016 after being awarded a contract for the licensing purposes and basic engineering design for this unit.  The scope for this unit included the company’s design for a CDHydro depentanizer, the company’s proprietary C5 CDAlky unit design, and support services for the unit’s commissioning and start up.
