ORLEN Halts Misguided Olefins III Project
The ORLEN Management Board has decided to halt the Olefins III project after determining that the actual implementation costs would have exceeded the initial estimates by sixfold. This decision is expected to save the company approximately PLN 15 billion. The funds will be redirected towards projects that sustainably enhance the competitiveness of both the company and the Polish economy. Irregularities related to the capital investment process have been reported to the prosecutor’s office. Additionally, ORLEN is considering pursuing a compensatory claim against former management board members, enabled by a recently adopted resolution of the General Meeting.

Stamicarbon, the nitrogen technology licensor of the MAIRE engineering group, will deliver a Process Design Package for Qinghai Yuntianhua International Fertilizer Co., Ltd. to revamp its dual-line urea plant in Qinghai Province, China. The urea plant is comprised of two identical lines, each with a capacity of 1212 MTPD, utilizing prilling as finishing technology. The proposed revamp design will be implemented in both lines simultaneously.
Borealis Invests EUR 4.5 Million in Porvoo Steam Cracker, Enabling Increased Share of Circular Raw Materials Used in Production
Borealis announces a EUR 4.5 million investment in the cracker furnaces of its olefins unit in Porvoo, Finland. This investment ensures that the Porvoo steam cracker, which is part of a highly integrated petrochemical complex, can increase the share of renewable and recycled raw materials used in its base chemicals (ethylene and propylene) production; thus, supporting Borealis Strategy 2030 and driving the transformation to a circular economy. The Porvoo investment program, which has already been kicked off and is expected to be completed in 2025, follows last year's completion of a major cracker furnace update in Stenungsund, Sweden.
SABIC Fujian Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. Proceeds with Large-Scale Ethylene Project Integrating Multiple Lummus Technologies and Services
Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and value-driven energy solutions, announced that SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Co., Ltd.’s grassroots complex in Fujian Province, China, will leverage Lummus’ ethylene and co-monomer technologies. SABIC Fujian Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between SABIC Industrial Investment Company (wholly owned by SABIC) and Fujian Fuhua Gulei Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (holding by Fujian Energy and Petrochemical Group). Formed in 2022, SABIC Fujian Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. is a 51:49 joint venture, with SABIC being the majority owner. On January 22, 2024, SABIC announced the final investment decision for the SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Complex (Sino-Saudi Gulei Ethylene Complex Project) and plans to begin construction this year and expects to complete construction in 2026. The complex is the largest single investment joint venture project with foreign investment in Fujian Province to date.

Subject to clearance from the relevant anti-trust authorities and final investment decision by the partners, this joint venture aims to produce bio-ethylene from bio-ethanol dehydration and to commercialize I'm green TM bio-based polyethylene (PE), using the EtE EverG reen TM technology. Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. (“HDEC”) has been awarded contracts for two EPC packages related to a petrochemical expansion at the SATORP refinery in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Package 1 (Mixed Feed Cracker and Refinery Off Gases) involves installing a Mixed Feed Cracker (MFC) to produce an additional 1,650 KTA (kilo tons per annum) of ethylene and related industrial gases. Package 4 (Utilities, Flares & Interconnecting) relates to installation of facilities that supply utilities such as electricity and water to plants, and functions as interconnecting systems that support main packages within the facilities.

Saudi Aramco and France's TotalEnergies have awarded contracts to build the $11 billion Amiral petrochemicals complex in the city of Jubail in the kingdom's Eastern Province. The awarding of the engineering, procurement and construction contracts for main processing units and associated utilities marks the start of construction work on the major project, following the final investment decision made in December 2022, the companies said on Saturday.
