Iberdrola and bp to collaborate to accelerate EV charging infrastructure and green hydrogen production
Iberdrola and bp today announced their intention to form a strategic collaboration aiming to help accelerate the energy transition. Together, the companies intend to collaborate to significantly expand fast EV public charging infrastructure to support the adoption of electric vehicles, as well as to develop large scale green hydrogen production hubs in Spain, Portugal and the UK.
Funding decision for hydrogen pilot project in Krummhoern natural gas storage facility received
Uniper Energy Storage will test the construction and operation of a new salt cavern specifically built for hydrogen storage on a large scale and in a real-world environment at the natural gas storage facility in Krummhoern, Northern Germany, which has not been used commercially since 2017. For this purpose, a new pilot cavern will be sol-technically constructed using an existing well. During the trial operation, equipment and materials will be examined for hydrogen compatibility, and experience will be gained in the storage of exclusively green hydrogen in a salt cavern and its delivery and further use.

Unigel installs the first industrial scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil. The company, which is one of the largest chemical companies in Latin America and the largest manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers in Brazil, invests a total of US$ 120 million in the development of the production site for green hydrogen. Large-volume electrolysis plant is to be built in Burgenland
The largest electrolyser in Austria to date will be built in Burgenland. When fully expanded, 40,000 tons of green hydrogen will be produced from 300 MW of wind and solar energy . This makes the project – initiated by Burgenland Energie together with VERBUND and partners – one of the largest hydrogen projects, even in a European comparison. In a joint press conference, Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil, VERBUND CEO Michael Strugl and Burgendland Energie CEO Stephan Sharma presented the joint plans. Green hydrogen is an important step towards energy independence and climate neutrality, as is unanimously emphasized.
European Commission approves up to EUR 5.4 billion of public support by fifteen Member States for the hydrogen technology value chain
The Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, an Important Project of Common European Interest (‘IPCEI') to support research and innovation and first industrial deployment in the hydrogen technology value chain. The project, called “IPCEI Hy2Tech” was jointly prepared and notified by fifteen Member States: Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain.
Buckeye Partners completes Bear Head Clean Energy acquisition
Buckeye Partners, L.P. (Buckeye) today announced that it closed on the previously announced acquisition of Bear Head Energy, Inc. (Bear Head), which is developing a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage and export project in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia with hydrogen electrolyzer capacity of over two gigawatts.

HIF Global begins approval process for its first carbon neutral eFuels manufacturing facility in Australia
HIF Global, the world’s leading eFuels company, announced today that it has begun the development of Australia’s first large-scale, carbon-neutral eFuels production facility in Tasmania. HIF Asia Pacific, a wholly owned subsidiary of HIF Global, filed a Notice of Intent (NoI) with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) seeking approval for the facility, which will be located in north-west Tasmania.

First Hydrogen applies to Net Zero Fund for two green hydrogen production sites
Energy and automotive brand, First Hydrogen, is pleased to announce it has has submitted two Green Hydrogen production projects for the initial round of funding through the UK Government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF) Strand 1 program. The program is funded by the Ministry of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for £240 million. The NZHF is part of the UK Government’s initiatives to promote the production of home-grown green hydrogen and is a means to achieving the ambitious 10 GW of domestic production by 2030, of which ‘at least’ 5GW will need to be from electrolytic sources.

Rolls-Royce to develop mtu hydrogen electrolyzer and invest in Hoeller Electrolyzer
Rolls-Royce is entering the hydrogen production market and acquiring a 54% majority stake in electrolysis stack specialist Hoeller Electrolyzer, whose innovative technology will form the basis of a new range of mtu electrolyzer products from its Power Systems division. Hoeller Electrolyzer, based in Wismar, Germany, is an early-stage technology company that is developing highly efficient polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) stacks, under the brand name Prometheus, for the cost-effective production of hydrogen.
INEOS in Köln receives state funding for Green Hydrogen feasibility study
The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has confirmed EUR 770,000 funding to support a feasibility study for the construction of a 100-megawatt water electrolysis plant for the production of green hydrogen at the INEOS site in Köln/Dormagen. INEOS plans to build and operate a new green hydrogen plant at the site, as part of its EUR 2 billion Euro package of green hydrogen projects across Europe announced in October last year. The project at the Köln site alone could lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 100,000 tonnes per year.
Gasunie starts construction of national hydrogen network in the Netherlands
Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten announced new plans for the construction of a national transport network for hydrogen. Gasunie will develop the hydrogen network in the Netherlands in the coming years, after which it will assume the role of TSO (Transmission System Operator). Gasunie will also play an important role in the storage and import of hydrogen. Due to the expected growth in offshore hydrogen production in the North Sea, Minister Jetten will investigate whether Gasunie can also fulfill the role of grid operator at sea. These new plans are a major step in the development of a more sustainable energy system in the Netherlands.
GKN Hydrogen, SoCalGas and the NREL agree to collaborate on the launch of an innovative hydrogen storage solution project
GKN Hydrogen and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today announced the companies will work with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on an innovative green hydrogen storage solution. GKN Hydrogen’s HY2MEGA can enable safe, long duration clean energy storage without the need for compression. At scale, this combined technology could provide resilient power in case of widespread outages. It also highlights the technologies needed to reach carbon neutrality and accelerate clean fuel initiatives.
Ceres and Shell sign agreement for green hydrogen
Ceres, a global leader in fuel cell and electrochemical technology, is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Shell to deliver a megawatt scale solid oxide electrolyser (SOEC) demonstrator in 2023. Shell and Ceres are building this partnership to utilise SOEC technology to deliver high-efficiency, low-cost green hydrogen; now widely viewed as a credible route to decarbonise hard-to-abate parts of the energy system that rely on fossil fuels today.
Equinor and SSE Thermal buy Triton
Norwegian energy firm Equinor and UK utility SSE Thermal are buying power company Triton Power from Energy Capital Partners (ECP) for £341mn ($416mn) and starting preparations to use hydrogen in Triton’s Saltend power station on the Humber Estuary in the UK’s East Yorkshire region.

LG Chem to Produce and Run NCC Plant on Hydrogen
LG Chem announced its plan to produce hydrogen as a key component of its long-term 2050 Net Zero corporate sustainability goal. Aligned with this goal, South Korea’s largest chemical company said it would establish a plant in Daesan, Korea, with the capacity to produce 50,000 tons of hydrogen annually by the second quarter in 2024. This plant will be the first LG Chem site to produce pure hydrogen, apart from those earned as off-gases.
HH2E and MET plan €1bn German green hydrogen project
German green hydrogen developer HH2E and Swiss energy trader MET Group have unveiled a joint proposal to invest c.€1bn (c.$1.03bn) in more than 1GW of electrolyser capacity in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Germany’s Baltic coast by 2030.
